Pranchiyettan and the Saint – Review

Posted by Admin On September - 11 - 2010

Once again Ranjith proves that he is a class apart from other filmmakers in Malayalam. ‘Pranchiyettan and the Saint’ is a film that makes you feel that a commercial movie can be ‘class’ movie as well.

This film is about Cherammel Eanasu Francis (aka ‘pranchiyettan’), an extremely rich business man in Thrissur. He has plenty of money , but is not happy with his position in society. The complex of being uneducated and being called ‘ari pranchi’ makes him do many (mis)adventures for the sake of getting a better status in his society. Each one of those adventures is really hilarious and the audience seem to like pranchiyettan more and more as the film progresses. The complete film is shown as being narrated by pranchiyettan to a ‘saint’ who he meets inside the church. First half of the movie is the best part of the movie with some really funny moments (now dont think that 2nd half is bad, its just that 1st half was brilliant).

Priya Mani makes her entrance just at the end of half1. She plays the role of an interior designer and does her role quite well as expected. A boy named Pauly makes his entrance in the 2nd half. Then the story is about how pranchiyettan helps him him out from his pathetic situation in life. At first one feels that the story of Pauly makes the movie actually drift from the real soul of the movie, ie, pranchiyettans life, but at the end everything seem to gell up so well.In fact the only scenes which i felt were unnecessary were the ones involving jagathy (who enters as a tution teacher for Pauly). Everything else seems to be perfect.

Mammootty is the real star of the movie (after ranjith). He does the role of pranchiyettan so convincingly that it makes you feel that only he can do this role with such ease. All other actors- innocent, siddique, kushboo, sasi etc do their roles perfectly well. Kushboo plays the role of pranchi’s lost love(who marries his classmate jose, played by siddique). The role of saint is done by an australian actor. Ranjith himself has dubbed for that character. The boy who plays Pauly also does his part really well.
The only song in the movie ‘kinavile janaalakal’ is quite good. In most malayalam movies we find songs being forced into the movie. But this one comes at the right time one never feels that the continuity is lost.

Overall Pranchiyettan and the saint is a must watch movie. I havnt seen shikkar or elsamma enna aankutty. But for those films to beat pranchiyettan , they need to be really outstanding.
