Kumaran is not a student of Mahathma college. But he is the life and soul of the campus. Spending his days entirely for and with the students, Kumaran is like a gang leader who is always in front to raise the needs of students. He is the only person who can influence the students of this college to any extent and they loved him beyond every political divisions and ideologies that other wise, split them up.
Students called him with love ‘Kumaretten’. Superstar Mohanlal is again back to another campus story donning Kumaran, (a character like ‘Lalettan’ that he did in ‘Sarvakalashala’ released in1990) in the new film directed by Thulasidas titled ‘College Kumaran’.
Mollywood film history shows that well made campus films had always made good returns from the box office. Films like ‘Sarvakalashala’,’Cheppu, Niram’, ‘Nammal’ and ‘Classmates’ to the latest ‘Chocolate’ had been the favorites of every type of audiences, which helped those films to become well known hits.
Following this trend is this new film told in the campus backdrop, with plenty of songs and heroines.
Mohanlal’s character in the film, Kumaran was a college drop out before he joined the army. Now an ex-military officer with years of service, Kumaran at his late thirties is forced to run the canteen of Mahatma College. Maintaining this canteen had been the family business of Kumaran’s father for years. And since his father’s death, Kumaran was left to run the canteen as per his father’s wishes.
Kumaran is special to all college students who is often asked advice by students on very matters including the maintaining of love affairs. Even though a chronic bachelor, he is always there to give advices on every student related matters and to maintain peace and harmony among students. He is an integral part of every campus friendships, love fights, youth festivals, and even college tours, where he is a special invitee.
Even though Kumaran enjoyed unlimited support from the students, a few in the campus didn’t like his free activities inside the campus. Among those who hated him is Madhavi (Vimala Raman), the college’s history professor, who always felt that he is the major reason behind the students getting pampered and spoiled. But very soon the tables are expected to turn, as Madhavi started liking him after a few incidents.
‘College Kumaran’ in the scripts of Suresh Pothuval, (who had earlier penned for films like ‘Meghasandhesham’ and ‘Naadan Pennum Nattu Pramaaniyum’) is directed by Thulasidas. His earlier film with Mohanlal ‘Mr Brahamachari’ which came out in 2002 was also a reasonable success.
The film also features Balachandra Menon, Janardhanan, Nedumudi Venu, Siddique, Harishree Ashokan, Saiju Kurup, Salim Kumar, Sai Kumar, Vijayaraghavan, Arun, Suraj Venjaranmoodu, Shamna, Remya Nambeshan, Samvrutha Sunil, Sajitha Bety, Manka Mahesh and Lakshmi Krishnamurthy in other important roles.
The other technical crew includes Venugopal as cameraman, P C Mohanan as editor and Gireesh Menon as art director. The film has four songs written by Shibu Chakraborthy set to music by Ouseppachan.
‘College Kumaran’ produced by the Bency Martin in the banner of Fairy Queen Productions is distributed by Emil and Eric digital films. The movie which was shot mostly in the capital city will reach the theatres by the last week of January.
